The staff physician will present the cases and ask how they would approach the cases and what decisions they would make. This format is designed to be interactive, and a cognitive simulation scenario. The goal for the staff is to create a flipped classroom model.
Format Pearls
- For staff, please identify a pre-reading article, video, or case.
- Assigning readings or other materials that fellows must review before the session can help to provide a foundation for more in-depth discussion and problem-solving during this conference.
- Team-based learning (TBL) is a method that involves assigning readings or other materials before a session, followed by group activities and discussions during class time. This approach promotes critical thinking skills.
- The goal is to focus on clinical reasoning:
- At multiple time points in the session, consider asking fellows centered around their thought process:
- What is your working diagnosis based on history and physical alone?
- What differentials would you consider given the data provided?
- What is the typical illness script of this diagnosis and are there aspects which differ from the classic presentation?
- What would be your approach to big-picture management goals?
- Are there acute or emergent diagnostic or management considerations?
- Highlight branch-point decision moments (i.e. intubate or not, initial pressor choice, etc.)
- Allow fellows to work together and explain their reasoning in depth
- Provide questions or scenarios apropos to fellow training level.
- Incorporate relevant literature particularly related to sentinal PCCM articles or guidelines.
- Incorporate audience response multiple-choice questions.
- Incorporate principles of:
- Systems Based Practice
- Value Based Care
- Cost integration
- Here is a Key Entrustable Professional Activity: Identifies service-based resources to address the management plan for the critically ill child, promotes interdisciplinary discussions to address all comorbidities and case management issues
